Painting from a black and white photo

I'm working on an acrylic painting from a black and white photo. I'm a beginning painter and am stuck with how to choose colors for this photo. So far, I'm thinking that I have to just guess the colors.

Do you have any tips?

Hello,

To guess colors that are fairly accurate, you can break down the photo into it's individual elements. What is in the photo? If you are painting people, for instance, you will need to invent colors for their flesh tones, their clothes, their hair, and their surroundings.

Find similar images for each of those elements, either online or in books or magazines, and use that as a guide for choosing colors for your painting. For instance, find colored photos where the skin color seems to match what you imagine the skin color in your black and white photo to be. That will give you a good reference point when you are trying to mix colors for your painting. You can do that for each of the specific elements in your painting.

Hope that helps, and best of luck with it!
