Learn how
to create your own skull drawing!
I'll show you how to draw a skull in 12 easy steps. If you want, you can then color in and decorate the skull to make it really unique and crazy!
This
drawing lesson will show you all the steps to create
the skull on the left. This is one of the more advanced skulls, so
if it feels overwhelming, start with an
easier pencil drawing of a skull.
The skull drawing that you will learn on this page is the same skull I used as the basis for creating my most popular Day of the Dead skull drawing, Rejoicing Quietus. You can see Rejoicing Quietus on the top right Skull Art column! Click on the small picture to see a bigger version of what it looks like. You can see more of my Day of the Dead skulls on the right!
In total, I'll give you step-by-step directions on how to draw 9 different fun and funky skulls. You can use a pencil, pen, markers, or crayons - whatever you have on hand. If you're just getting the hang of it, you might want to try with a pencil first. That way you can erase your mistakes. If you like the final drawing, you can always go over the lines with a marker or other art material.
Click on each skull to be taken to simple step-by-step instructions for drawing each one.

This
skull is a bit more advanced than some of the other skulls,
so there are more steps. Watch the animation on the left before
you start drawing, so that you can see how the individual steps
build to create this cool skull drawing! |
|
|
Draw the upper half of a half-circle. |
Add 2 lines, 1 inside each side of the circle. Start the lines inside the circle and gently curve them outside the circle. |
Continuing on these 2 lines, draw 2 lines (1 on each side) bringing the angle of the lines down and slightly inwards. These lines will form the cheekbones of the skull. |
|
Finish rounding out the cheekbones by bringing the lines back in towards the center and then down. |
Connect the two sides with one gently sweeping straight line. This will be the bottom of the teeth! |
Underneath the cheekbones, draw a broad u-shaped line that connects one cheekbone to the other, crossing over the lines you drew in Step 4. This will form the top of the teeth. If you get stuck, watch the animation. |
|
In between the lines you drew in Steps 6 and 7, draw another parallel line. This line will be the middle of the teeth. |
Draw several lines that go up and down to form the teeth. Now your skull is smiling! |
Under the cheekbones, next to the lines you drew in Step 6, draw 2 lines (1 on each side) going downwards and slanting inwards. |
|
Connect these 2 lines with a gently curved u-shaped line. Now your skull has a jaw! Almost done! |
Above the teeth, draw 2 nostrils in between the cheekbones. |
Above the nostrils, draw 2 eyes. Now you have completed your skull drawing! |
Cool, you've just drawn a skull! There are 8 more skull styles to choose from, so once you've mastered this one, go back to the beginning of How to Draw A Skull and try your hand at a few more funky skulls.
This skull design that you just learned was the one used to create the skull on the right. This gives you an idea of how you can add a bunch of colors and patterns to your skull to make it really come alive!
